Everything you need to know about CleanStream
CleanStream will automatically skip or mute unwanted moments while you watch.
An ambush scene is unwanted sexual content, blasphemy, gore or other offensive content that appears suddenly while you are watching. CleanStream is built to help families avoid those moments.
CleanStream costs $12/year — that's just $1/month. One subscription covers up to 2 computers in your household with no per-platform charges.
CleanStream is quick and easy to set up with simple instructions to get you started in minutes.
CleanStream is installed as a browser extension and takes less than a minute to set up:
Go to the Chrome Web Store, search for CleanStream and click Add to Chrome. It takes less than a minute.
Pin CleanStream to your toolbar for easy access
Open your streaming service (Netflix, Prime, etc.)
Start watching
That’s it - CleanStream works automatically while you watch.
CleanStream currently works with 6 platforms:
Netflix
Prime Video
Binge
Apple TV
Paramount+
Max (formerly HBO Max), and
Stan
Disney+ coming soon!
Sexual content
Blasphemy and strong language
Gore and excessive violence
You stay in control of what gets filtered.
CleanStream intelligently blanks or mutes only the parts you don’t want to see or hear so you can still follow the story without awkward interruptions.
Yes. CleanStream does not modify or copy any content. It simply filters playback for your personal viewing giving you control over what you see and hear.
Yes - one subscription covers up to 2 computers in your household. If you need more computers, please contact us.
CleanStream does not run directly inside Smart TV apps. Platform apps do not support Chrome extensions.
CleanStream works through Google Chrome so it needs to run on a computer. You can still watch on your TV by using the TV as the screen for that computer.
Once it is set up, using Chrome on your TV can actually feel easier than using Smart TV apps. You can keep your streaming services saved as Chrome bookmarks then use a mouse to open Netflix etc. instead of typing and navigating with a TV remote.
The simple answer:
CleanStream runs in Chrome
Chrome extensions need a computer
Smart TV apps are separate and will not be filtered
To watch on your TV, use Chrome from a connected small PC
Important
If you want CleanStream active on the big screen, make sure your family watches through Chrome on the connected computer, not through the built-in Smart TV streaming apps.
Tip: disable Smart TV streaming apps
Once your CleanStream setup is working, consider disabling or removing the streaming apps on your Smart TV. This helps prevent anyone accidentally opening an unfiltered app instead of watching through CleanStream.
CleanStream is currently built as a Chrome browser extension, so it works best in Google Chrome. It also works in Edge and Brave, which are built on the same technology as Chrome — just install it the same way via the Chrome Web Store.
The good news is that if you're setting up a small mini PC to watch on your TV (as described above), these PCs come pre-installed with Windows, and Chrome is free to download and install on Windows in under a minute at chrome.google.com. So you'll be up and running quickly.
Safari and Firefox are not currently supported, but are on our roadmap.
Yes. You can cancel your subscription at any time with no lock-in contracts or cancellation fees.
CleanStream works locally in your browser and does not track or store your viewing history. Your streaming account details are never shared with us.
You do not need an expensive computer. CleanStream only needs a small Windows PC that can run Google Chrome smoothly and connect to your TV by HDMI cable.
Recommended small PC:
A mini desktop PC
Windows 10 or Windows 11
Google Chrome installed
HDMI output
Internet connection
Keyboard and mouse
Good second-hand options include:
Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny
HP EliteDesk Mini
Dell OptiPlex Micro
These are small business PCs that are often available used for around $100-$200.
Hardware you will need:
Mini desktop PC
HDMI cable
TV with an available HDMI port
Keyboard and mouse
How it works:
Connect the small PC to your TV with HDMI
Open Chrome on the PC
Install CleanStream from the Chrome Web Store
Sign in to your streaming service through Chrome
Watch on your TV with CleanStream active
Best setup
A small PC stays connected to your TV permanently. Once it is set up, you simply switch your TV to that HDMI input and watch through Chrome.
Bonus: Your TV becomes a real computer screen
With a small PC connected, your TV is no longer just a Smart TV with awkward remote-control menus and the annoying default screens the TV forces you through. It becomes a large computer monitor you can control with a mouse and keyboard.
Benefits include:
Open streaming services quickly from Chrome bookmarks
Use a mouse instead of slowly navigating apps with a TV remote
Type searches, passwords and emails much faster with a keyboard
Browse the internet properly on the big screen
Use web apps like Gmail, Google Docs, Microsoft Office, Canva or banking sites
Watch YouTube, lessons, sport, church services or video calls through the browser
Keep CleanStream active while streaming through Chrome
Use the same setup for family movie nights, schoolwork or presentations
For many families, this ends up being easier than a normal Smart TV because everything is controlled like a computer, not like a clunky TV menu.
